Custom software development

Business software shaped around the way you work.

When spreadsheets, paper forms and generic tools stop keeping up, we design and build applications that fit your processes, your people and your growth, then stay on to support them.

Overview

Software that follows your process, not the other way round

Most organisations reach a point where off-the-shelf software forces them to work around its limits. Approvals happen on WhatsApp, data is re-typed between systems and reports are assembled by hand at the end of every month.

We start by understanding how work really flows through your organisation: who does what, where information comes from and where it gets stuck. From there we design an application that removes the friction, with the roles, permissions and reports your team needs.

The same team that builds our own SaaS products works on custom projects, so you get the discipline of product engineering applied to software that belongs to your organisation. Ownership and licensing terms are set out clearly in the proposal and contract.

What we build

Systems for the work that keeps your organisation running

From approval workflows to management dashboards, these are the building blocks we combine for your project.

  • Workflow and approval systems

Digitise requests, approvals and hand-offs so every step is tracked, every person knows what is waiting for them and nothing is lost in chat threads.

    • Multi-step approvals
    • Notifications and reminders
    • Audit trail of changes
  • Internal tools and portals

Back-office applications, staff portals and admin panels that bring scattered spreadsheets and forms together into one reliable place.

    • Role-based dashboards
    • Search and filtering
    • Bulk import and export
  • Web and mobile applications

Responsive web applications and mobile-first interfaces that work on the laptops, tablets and phones your team already uses.

    • Responsive web apps
    • Mobile-first field tools
    • Customer-facing portals
  • Roles, permissions and multi-site

Systems where each person sees and does exactly what their role allows, across departments, branches or islands.

    • Granular permissions
    • Branch and department scoping
    • User administration
  • Reporting and analytics

Operational dashboards and exportable reports built on the data your system already captures, so month-end stops being a manual exercise.

    • Live operational views
    • Scheduled reports
    • Spreadsheet and PDF exports
  • Modernisation and data migration

Replace ageing desktop software or spreadsheet systems step by step, carrying your historical data across with checks at every stage.

    • Legacy system review
    • Data cleansing and mapping
    • Phased cut-over plans

Methodology

How a custom build runs

Five steps, each with something you can review, so decisions are made on evidence rather than assumptions.

  1. Step 01

    Step 1: Discover

Workshops and interviews with the people who do the work, to map current processes, pain points, data sources and what success looks like.

  2. Step 02

    Step 2: Design and prototype

Workflows, data model and key screens are designed and tested as a clickable prototype before significant build effort begins.

  3. Step 03

    Step 3: Build in increments

The application is built in short cycles. Each cycle ends with a demo, so you can review progress and adjust priorities as you learn.

  4. Step 04

    Step 4: Test and migrate

Functional testing with your team, data migration rehearsals and fixes, so go-live is planned rather than improvised.

  5. Step 05

    Step 5: Launch and support

Go-live, training and handover, followed by the support and improvement arrangement set out in your agreement.

Deliverables

What you receive

Typical outputs of an engagement. The exact deliverables for your project are listed in the proposal, so everyone knows what “done” means.

  • Discovery summary with scope, priorities and a phased plan
  • Workflow maps and clickable prototype of key screens
  • Working application delivered in regular, reviewable increments
  • Database design and data migration from existing sources
  • Administrator and user documentation
  • Training sessions for administrators and key users
  • Deployment to the hosting environment agreed in the proposal
  • Support and maintenance arrangement, if included in the contract

Suitable for

Projects we are well suited to

Typical starting points for a custom software engagement. If yours is different, we are happy to talk it through.

  • Operations and back-office systems

Bookings, job tracking, inspections, asset registers and other day-to-day operational records.

  • Customer and member portals

Secure areas where customers, members or partners can submit requests, track status and download documents.

  • Management information dashboards

A single view of figures that are currently compiled by hand from several spreadsheets or systems.

  • Replacing spreadsheet-based processes

Turning critical but fragile spreadsheets into multi-user applications with validation and history.

  • Extending an existing product

New modules, interfaces or integrations around a system you already rely on.

  • Minimum viable products

A focused first version of a new digital service, built to test the idea with real users before scaling.

How do we know whether we need custom software or an existing product?

If an existing product, including one of ours, covers most of what you need, it is usually the faster and lower-risk option. Custom software makes sense when your process is a genuine differentiator, when you need to connect several systems in a specific way, or when available products force too many workarounds. We will tell you honestly which route we think fits during the first conversation.

How long does a custom software project take?

It depends on scope, the number of integrations and how quickly decisions can be made. We do not quote a timeline before discovery. Once the scope is understood, the proposal sets out phases, milestones and the target dates we agree together.

Who owns the source code?

Ownership, licensing and handover of source code are agreed explicitly in the proposal and contract for each project, so there is no ambiguity before work starts. If you have specific requirements, raise them early and we will reflect them in the agreement.

Can you work with our existing systems and data?

Yes, that is common. During discovery we review the systems and data you already have, how they can be accessed and what condition the data is in. Integration and migration work is then scoped as part of the plan.

What happens after the system goes live?

We offer ongoing support, maintenance and improvement. The level of support, response arrangements and costs are defined in the support agreement that accompanies the project, rather than promised in general terms here.

Tell us what you have in mind. We will review it, ask the right questions and suggest practical next steps: a scoping session, a proposal or an honest recommendation.
